Underwater Ship Repair & Construction:

IMS holds experience and has a long history in both underwater repairs of vessels and underwater installations as well as construction and installations of new equipment and complex industrial installations.

Our divers are IMCA certified and educated and holds the highest wet welding certifications, approved by Class.

Example: When the Maritime Suzanne from Aurora Tankers arrived fully loaded with petroleum products in Cristobal Panama, the SMT had already experienced severe oil leakages and water ingress from its Stern Tube, since departure Houston TX. Dive surveys showed that a 2-inch wire was solidly wrapped around the vessels shaft and had crushed the rope guards which had started spinning with the wire, and eaten up, wore down the entire Shaft Seal Rings, , sea plugs, bolts and seals. After other dive companies had informed Aurora Tankers that the damages was beyond repairs and that the vessel needed immediate dry docking, Aurora Tankers, trough its Class, was able to get hold of IMS Diving. After initial surveys IMS removed the wire entirely, designed and fabricated a special “flange clamp system” which was installed under water at the outer Cristóbal anchorage during rough weather conditions. After sea trials the systems proved efficient and all leakages had ceased. The Vessel was permitted by the Panama Canal Authority to transit the Panama Canal. Post transit a new survey was conducted by IMS (during night) and the system still proved successful with no leakages at all. The vessels was permitted by flag State , underwrites and class to proceed to offloading port in Ulsan, Korea, which it successfully reached after a 4-week sea voyage. Post discharging the Vessels could sail to a very affordable dry dock in China for permanent repairs. Zero leakages and/or water ingress had occurred during the sea passage and the vessel arrived in dry dock with its temporary repairs intact.

The Owners, its P&I and underwriters had saved multi million dollars by avoiding expensive emergency dry docking in Panama, avoiding to transfer all her cargo to another vessels during expensive and complex STS operations, avoided additional freight by another vessel for the entire cargo to her destination in Korea, avoided severe amounts in Off hire, avoided expensive ballast voyages post an eventual emergency dry docking etc. for the net amount of 70k$.

The above is as atypical example of what IMS is capable, willing and ABLE to do when other fails and surrenders. Working in harsh environments in the North Sea, Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands has given us very valuable experience and training for working during dark cold hrs. in rough weather conditions offshore.

Hull Cleaning:

Since the early days, the need for smooth and fast hulls was very important. The faster the ship, the safer it was from weather, enemy nation’s navy vessels and pirates. Captain Cook was well known for seeking tie ups for his ships within freshwater basins such as Rio de la Plata in Argentina and other rivers in South America, which often kills the salt water based marine organisms.

During my own days as a captain, in the 80 and 90ties, we did not bother much as TBT had become the “ultimate solution”. Today however TBT is no longer legal or allowed by IMO, Flag States and other government agencies, worldwide. Shipowners and Managers has gotten even a stronger headache nowadays, satisfying government bodies everywhere, as well as IMO, by proving and document good bio fouling management practices, an environmental profile and the fight against “invasive species”.

Attempting to assist both ourselves and our long-term clients we have written this “Hull Cleaning Guide”. It is purely based on our many years of cleaning ships and polishing propellers. We hope that it will serve as a tool for you that can help to plan, prepare and secure a good result from this PITA. (This is a very compressed version of our Full Guide to Hull Cleaning, which you will receive upon request by email or phone).

Why do we Clean ?

The Primary product that we deliver to you is simply: Better Performance, Reports including HC Certificates, and Underwater HD Videos and photos.

Propeller Polishing:

How Many Times have you seen a dive report stating: Propeller polished from Rubert E to Rubert A Grade? And I am sure you have often asked yourself, how the heck does the diver know that? He doesn’t, he just say it as everyone does! Unless polishing is done for several days the above is simply impossible.

In IMS we have put science behind this all, working close with professor Sverre Steen at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. Findings are as follows: During a Polishing say 4-6 Hrs. maximum achievement is  2 grades, for instance C to A, or more likely D to B or even E to C. However if really the increase in 2 grades is achieved, for a typical 14 knot Panamax Tanker/Bulker you should have an increase in speed of 0.3 – 0.5 knots ! (at the same consumption).

Research and development have made us able to delver a very high quality propeller polishing, and as our many clients already know, we operate on a no cure no pay basis. We do not sell Cleaning and Polishing WE SELL INCREASED PERFORMANCE. (Still today we have not lost a penny on our philosophy).

We do measure all Polishing before and after by use of a Roughens meter. We have also developed a Rule of Thumb for our underwater THE PROPELLER BLADE (MIRROR) YOU HAVE NO RUBERT A AT ALL!!

Trough systematic training of our uw techs we have been able to develop a safe routine which trough roughness verification is guaranteeing the highest Rubert Grade achievable for their propeller
